Afrosentric

Over the last few years, I've been given opportunities to perform at events in and around my island. In some cases I write an original poem for the event. This poem was written for a fashion design competition that was called Afrosentric.

One of the organizers wanted a spoken word performer speaking with background music as dancers danced. Another organizer had seen me perform at Soothe had suggested me. As I knew the first organizer, I had an in.

What I found amusing was the fact that I've turned my back on what I studied at college, Fashion Design, and I turn around and am performing at a fashion event. It still tickles me to think about it.

Anyway this introduction as grown too long, so here is the poem:

Traveling across
A sea of sand,
A man as dark
As the sun is bright
Adjusts his turban
And looks to the
Horizon, seeing
Nothing but sand
And somehow he
Finds comfort here.

Women dance under
The full moon,
Their hands reaching
High to the cloudless
Sky as the drums
Beat a rhythm
That is echoed in
Their hearts, in
Their souls. It was
The music that brought
Them to their feet,
To the dance.

Children laugh
Despite the emptiness
Of their stomachs,
They laugh.
Despite the poverty
That surrounds them,
They laugh.
Despite the many tears
That have fallen and
Will fall,
They laugh.

This land beyond
The horizon is not
Only deserts, grasslands
And jungles,
It is cities with
Buildings that try to
Touch the sky.
Technology and commerce
Fitting neatly in the palm
Of one's hand.

This land, so far
And yet so near
To us all.

It is near
When we look
At the reflection
In the mirror.

It is near
When we break
Out into song,
In our voices.

It is near
In the food we eat,
The way we speak,
The names we give our children,
The way the rhythm,
Any rhythm, flows
In and through us.

It is so far
And yet it
Is ingrained
In every cell
Of our being.

Our being,
The beings of
The stolen children,
Taken and forced
To toil in a land
That, too, was stolen
And yet they would
Have us believe that
It was discovered.

Despite our abduction,
We survived,
We survived enslavement,
We survived poverty,
We survived adapting
To a freedom that
Was not even a dream
To our parents.

And through this fire,
A new people was forged.
A Caribbean people,
But never do we forget
Our past, our history,
And the fact that
We are the children
Of Africa. We
Are not just Caribbean people
We are Afro-Caribbean people.

Our past proves
That we are a
Resilient people,
A creative people,
A people capable
Of everything and
Anything.

We have accomplished
So much in spite
Of our painful
Beginnings, we have
Created champions,
Artists, intellects, dancers,
Singers, designers and
The list goes on
And on and on.

And as the future
Extends beyond
The edge of our horizons,
There is so much
We can achieve,
We, the stolen children
Of Africa, we, the
Afro-Caribbean.

Although our leaders
Wish to return us
To slavery under
The moniker of jobs
Where we bow our heads
In servitude to
People with pale skins
And green bills.

We, the people, can choose
To be different.
We, the people,
Can show those who
Think we are only
Capable of laboring
Under the dictates
Of those who don't
Even look like us,
That we are better
Than this.

We, the people,
Can show the world
That we are creators,
Innovators, masters
Of industry and
Much, much more.

And tonight
We link our past
With our future.
Our past, Africa.
Our future,
A new generation
Of designers.
And that link,
That bridge,
We call

Afrosentric.

P.S. In this piece, I took a shot at the local politicians and would you know it the Minister of Culture was standing in front of me.

P.P.S. Will post the video within the coming week.

Queens Speech [video]

It's Media Wednesday and today I'm posting a video from one of the Expressions: Poetry At The Pub open mics. This video is from last year and I'm still getting used to seeing myself in video. More reason to get better when it comes to performing. Enjoy.

Good Morning - Spoken Word

For some time now I've been playing around with the idea of going into audio in the form of a podcast or just spoken word tracks. This was inspired by a lot of things, one was a couple scenes from "So I Married An Axed Murderer" when Mike Myers did spoken word with music accompaniment. Also when I lived in NYC, I was addicted to a Jazz radio station and one evening, they played a poet with a jazz accompaniment. I loved it! Over the years I came across poetry in this format and I was lucky to experience it in person when Expressions: Poetry At The Pub had a musician playing in the background during the open mic. That was one of the best moments at that particular open mic. Another source of inspiration is Tanya Evanson who I met a few weeks ago. She's a spoken word artist from Vancouver, Canada who does amazing work.

So last Saturday, I started to play around with GarageBand on my Mac and this is one of the pieces. What I found amusing was my recognizing the different intro music to the podcasts I listen to. I had a lot of fun making the following and the others that will be posted over the following weeks. You can only imagine how many times I had to read one poem to get it almost perfect and then to play around with the sound. I hope you like it. Comment and let me know what you think.

P.S.
This was a major feat as I'm not a major fan of my voice so be kind. LOL.

Spoken Word

My last poem was a piece I had created for the launch of a Carnival troupe and it was created and performed before it was even typed. I say typed because I didn't even write it and then post it on the blog. It was tattooed into my brain so I can speak it and then transcribed straight to this blog.

Now before I did the piece at the launch itself, I had given a few people the rough spoken word performance and it was well received. It was even enhanced by the suggestions from people (I now understand how to collaborate and make it work). So when it was time to lay it down I was real tight with it. Of course I could do better, but I could have done a whole lot worse.

The reception was not bad, but when I saw the comment left on my pic on FaceBook, a phrase came to mind. I looked up where it came from and it turns out it came from Matthew 7:6 and it goes

'Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces.'
I'm not saying the people at the launch are dogs or swine, I'm just saying that one should not waste your talent on people who would not appreciate it, who would not nurture it, support it and be inspired by it. They are not the type of people who would stay up late on a Saturday night to catch an episode of Def Poetry Jam or watch countless spoken word videos on YouTube. Most of these people don't know about the different open mics that are here on island and understand the lyrical skill that exists among them on this small island.

Our talents are holy, they are our gifts and should be used fully until they are spent, but we should never give what is holy, even if it is holy to ourselves only, to those who will never appreciate them. That's all I have to say on the matter. Below are some clips I found on YouTube, enjoy.

Life, Love and...... YouTube

As I was going through my home page on Facebook I came across the first video below and it reminded me of my poetry and the readings I've done and I realized that my most potent poems were about love. That made me pause for a moment and question if that is the only topic I'm passionate about. I know I'm vehement about pro-choice, I believe a child should be brought up with a mother and father present, I've accepted and love the colour of my skin and the features I've been blessed with. Why haven't I written about those? I'll have to sit down and reflect on that. While I do that enjoy the clips below:

I'm going to post this post on my other blog as well.
